The Lame Leaping For Joy: A Testimony of God's Healing Power
Good morning! I give praise to our God and the worthy name of Jesus Christ. It's wonderful to be back in the house of the Lord, worshiping with the saints of God. For those visiting, we're glad you're here to worship with us.
I've been away for two Sundays, enjoying some time drag racing with Amy. We had a great time, rested a lot, and missed you all. We felt your prayers and were praying for you too. Now, let's turn our attention to the Word of God, specifically Acts 3.
The First Apostolic Miracle
In Acts 3, we witness the first apostolic miracle: the healing of a lame man. After the birth of the church and the coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2, where Peter's sermon led to the salvation of around 3,000 souls, we now see the church growing and ministering.
A Glimpse into Early Church Life
Acts 2 gives us a glimpse of the early church life: breaking bread, fellowship, prayer, and teaching. But Acts 3 shows us their outreach. Peter and John were heading to the temple at the hour of prayer. As they went, they encountered a lame man begging at the temple gate called Beautiful.
The Healing of the Lame Man
Acts 3:6-8 (ESV) tells us: "But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God."
This man, lame from birth, was known to everyone as the beggar at the gate. Yet, in a moment, his life was transformed. He was not only healed but was also leaping and praising God, filled with joy and gratitude.
The Power and Purpose of Miracles
Miracles in the Bible, especially those performed by Jesus and the apostles, serve to authenticate the message and the messengers. They are signs pointing to a greater reality – the power and compassion of God. This miracle in Acts 3 is a powerful testimony to the healing power of Jesus' name.
Spiritual Application
Spiritually, we are all like the lame man, unable to walk with God on our own. Ephesians 2:1 (ESV) says, "And you were dead in the trespasses and sins." But through Jesus Christ, we are given new life and strength.
The story of the lame man reminds us that:
Jesus Heals Our Spiritual Lameness: Just as the lame man was healed physically, Jesus heals us spiritually, enabling us to walk in newness of life.
Our Testimony Should Reflect God's Work: Like the healed man, our lives should be filled with joy and praise, testifying to the transformative power of Jesus.
We Are Called to Share This Good News: The early church's growth was fueled by their commitment to share the gospel. We too are called to go out and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.
Conclusion
As we reflect on this miraculous healing, let's remember that Jesus is still in the business of transforming lives. If you're feeling spiritually lame, unable to walk with God, know that Jesus offers you healing and new life. Trust in Him, and let His power work through you.
Let's pray together, thanking God for His incredible grace and asking for boldness to share His love with others.
